Heinrich Valentin Schumann was born in New Braunfels, Texas, February 18, 1868, the oldest of seven children of Friedrick Schumann (1840-1922) and Anna Maria Mickesch (1845-1920). After attending local schools, he entered an apprenticeship with Dreiss Drugstore in San Antonio Texas. He later attended the Maryland College of Pharmacy in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated on March 26, 1889.
